Phase 4

A Semester in Review

Over the course of ENG 2100, I certainly feel I was able to progress my writing. Starting with the first course objective, “Compose as a process”, I got a lot of experience with peer-review, which really showed me the importance of getting an outside perspective on my writing. Many times, something connects well in my head but then when someone else reads it fresh, they are able to identify sloppy and abrupt transitions that have greatly helped me improve my essay writing.

Additionally, I feel I made progress in the second course objective, “Compose with an awareness of how intersectional identity, social conventions, and rhetorical situations shape writing”. My Literacy Narrative about my experiences in English classes throughout my adolescence helped me understand that those previous experience have shaped me a lot as a writer today whereas before I didn’t really consider how many personal experiences impacted my writing.

I also progressed in my ability to read and analyze texts critically. I especially liked looking at the Key and Peele skit and the “This is America” music video / corresponding article because analyzing them showed a lot about our culture today. This was very engaging to me taken my experience in English class in the past where we studied less exciting material.

The fourth objective, “Identify and engage with credible sources and multiple perspectives in your writing” I think I achieved with flying colors. I wasn’t great at citing my essays before but now, I’m a pro. I never knew how to cite an online video before in MLA, but judging on the picture below, I think I got it down.

Finally, when it comes to my ability to “Use conventions appropriate to audience, genre, and purpose, I feel a made some progress but not as much as I had hoped. I wanted to develop more of a personal writing style, but I struggled to find consistency in style throughout my essays. This has always been something I’ve struggled with and will look to improve on when I take my next English class. Overall, I feel I learned a lot and enjoyed our class. I look forward to continuing to build my skills next semester when I take my next English course.
